Rosacea Clinics with Our Registered Nurse Prescriber

what is rosacea

Rosacea is a long-term skin condition that mainly effects the face, most commonly appearing across the cheeks, nose, chin and forehead. People with lighter skin tones and being female can mean that you are more likely to suffer from the condition, but men can also suffer from the condition. Rosacea can come and go, you can experience flushing, burning or stinging when using skincare or water on the area. As the condition gets worse you may find the redness is there all the time.

The redness can be mistaken for thread veins or red veins that then start to appear in and around the area. These will remain even when the background redness has calmed down. You may develop small pink or red bumps that almost appear as small spots

Main Symptoms Include

  • Redness to cheeks, nose, chin and forehead
  • Small red veins also known as Thread veins
  • Bumps that appear on the skin similar to a small spot
  • Flushing to the face
  • Stinging whilst washing the area

Triggers for Rosacea

  • Alcohol
  • Spicy Foods
  • Cheese
  • Caffeine
  • Hot Drinks
  • Exercise

What causes Rosacea

It isn't known why some people may be more prone to developing Rosacea than others but what is known is that Rosacea is an infection in the sebaceous gland with a low grade infection of sebum. The body produces the sebum with the infection in already which is why this is a chronic condition.

When a blockage occurs higher up the hair follicle channel,  preventing the sebum from escaping, it has only one direction to travel, downwards! Meaning that the body attempts to deliver more white blood cells to help clear the infection. In order for the body to do this, it increases the blood vessels to the infected area. Which is why Thread veins appear to be more visible

After a long period of time, the cycle of new blood vessels and blocked follicles can make the skin feel dry, harder, more uneven and pitted

What Treatment is available for Rosacea?

Rosacea is a long-term skin condition that can be managed using a topical gel or cream prescription strength antibiotic . This helps to break the initial cycle of infection and allows the skin to clear the background redness to your skin.

The Nurse will explain what you can do do to break the 'Cleansing / Make-up Cycle' Leaflets are available for this during your consultation and treatment plan review

Once the infection, which is the cause of the redness to the skin is under control the Nurse is able to permanently remove the red veins (thread veins) using thermo-coagulation in a single treatment
